Or they were making a deliberate attempt to change the design. No. That is an unacceptable change and it will ruin the entire game. =P In seriousness though, the arms aren't an actual issue. I honestly will say that, the excessive use of sports tape notwithstanding, I do like most of the designs (Knuckles notwithstanding.) I can dig Sonic's scarf, and seeing Tails with those goggles/tool belt, I wonder why he didn't have them to begin with. Just...ease up on the damn sports tape, guys.

As far as writing goes, I like to think that Bob Rafei will incorporate some classic Crash Bandicoot humor. Obviously there won't be a silent protagonist, but I'm sure there will be plenty of gags.I also expect Eggman to be full of ham and cheese. Oh yeah, definitely. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for humour in the games. It is a series about brightly-coloured animals, after all. I just want it to be funny. The jokes peppered about the last few games' scripts sound like they were written by an 11-year-old desperately trying to get a laugh. They're rarely related to the situation and usually just derail the cutscenes into a weird awkwardness. Except Eggman's PA announcements in Colours, those were pretty good.

Yeah. The Sonic series can be...really lame when it comes to jokes. Sometimes it takes itself too seriously and that's where the problems come in. Like you said, it's an egg-shaped mad scientist trying to take over the world and can only be stopped by a team of multi-colored animals. It's gotta play like a B-movie.
The Mario and Luigi games are probably the best example I can come up with for writing. It was perfect. It reveled in its insanity. A plumber rescues a princess...let's call him in to fix some leaky pipes! Genius.

Sonic and Tails only punch in fighting games, which this is not. They both traditionally use spindash attacks which make zero sense on Tails part, so try figuring that one out.
Tails runs at superhuman speeds before utilizing his propeller tails. It makes sense that (in the context of the character utilizing athletic tape) he would need some for his shoes.
Actually, all this speed-talk makes me think the characters should have even more wrappings to protect their flesh from debris and insects and junk. Not that I'd like it. I actually don't like the tape, personally, but they are pretty defensible from a "logic" point of view (as opposed to a "what actually works for a good design" point of view).
Also, Amy's dress - lots of real life dresses use wire to stiffen the bottoms and create a particular look.
Seriousness of Sonic Games - I preferred the comic book level of seriousness in the Adventure games to the cheese sandwiches they've been selling since Shadow flopped.

Seriousness of Sonic Games - I preferred the comic book level of seriousness in the Adventure games to the cheese sandwiches they've been selling since Shadow flopped. I'd like something between the two. Some good comic-booky action adventure stories peppered lightly with nice character-based humour would be good. Sonic Riders actually had a lot of the kind of humour I'd like to be in there, it was just so poorly acted that you could barely tell. Speaking of which, I'm really hoping Amy's new actress will tone down the Minnie Mouse voice for this game. If she's gonna be around all the time talking like that, my ears will bleed.

I'm under the impression that all the voice actors will be the same (that's definitely Roger Craig Smith and Mike Pollock). But I do hope that Cindy Robinson uses a different tone for Amy. Based on her other work, she's certainly capable of it. And I can't imagine that Minnie Mouse voice fitting the new Amy.

Sonic and Tails only punch in fighting games, which this is not. They both traditionally use spindash attacks which make zero sense on Tails part, so try figuring that one out. Which only furthers my point: They have no reason to have their hands taped up like that whatsoever. They are unarmed, and so there is no need for a benefit to grip, and so the only reason they would tape their hands up would be to protect their fists if they were to punch, which is not something they even really do, so...why do they need sports tape on their hands again? That would make sense...if you needed to put athletic tape on your cars tires. You should rotate your car's tires every 7,500 miles. This number is about the same no matter what speed you go, even at Utah's 80 mph speed limit. Tails has been clocked hitting this speed, but only for a short enough stretch to get airborne. He would actually need to replace his shoes less often than a normal person, much less add any sort of protection to stretch their use out, assuming his shoes' soles are as tough as a car tire. I've seen this. I will grant that it is technically a realistic thing, but that doesn't make it less annoying to me.

The writing in the Adventure games was...decent. Sonic Adventure 2 was awful though. I never understood why that game was praised more than the first one. Sure, it wasn't as cheesy, but it didn't have as much heart.
God, that sounds dumb.

I totally agree with you there, Teev. I've always preferred Adventure over Adventure 2 in pretty much every aspect. Apparently Sonic Boom is mostly taking inspiration from Sonic 2, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Generations, which sounds like a good combo to me. Oh yeah, I know that. I'm just still referring to her as the new Amy, since she's barely done anything since the voice switch. I actually really wish they'd kept on the 4Kids voices for Amy and Knuckles. Besides Eggman, they were the only members of that cast who were any good.

You know, guys, the practicality of a video game character's outfit is irrelevant. The programming code doesn't care if the characters are "properly dressed" or not. The designs are entirely an aesthetic thing.
As far as that goes, I see the tape as a motif that sets the Boom characters apart from the "modern" characters. On that front, it's distinct, unobtrusive and complements the (mostly) minimalist style of the main Sonic characters.
I can't remember where I saw it, but there was another Bob Rafei interview where he said he originally wanted Sonic to wear pants, and he pitched that idea very passionately to Sonic Team. But Takashi Iizuka held firm against it, and Rafei eventually conceded that it was probably for the better. I agree, as I think pants would've been a bit too much and would've been more of a distraction than really adding anything. Plus, it might've made Sonic a little too similar to Crash Bandicoot.
So, I can forgive a little tape on the shoes and gloves.

The designs are entirely an aesthetic thing. No, I know. Otherwise Sonic wouldn't have been running around naked for the last 23 years. I'm rather ashamed of myself for what has transpired in this thread, not for the fact that the sports tape annoys me, but for the fact that I sucked myself into a debate over why it'd be unnecessary.

I don't mind if you guys wanted to get geeky about it, so I didn't mean to rain on the parade. I just don't want it to get out of hand. It's not exactly a serious topic.

The sports tape makes some amount of sense for Sonic. Real athletes and runners put bandages on their shoes in a practice called "spatting". It helps with balance. However, pants wouldn't make much sense for Sonic since he's supposed to be all aerodynamic and whatnot. Maybe if he were wearing bike shorts or a bodysuit, but that wouldn't make much sense either since his entire body is already blue. Also take into account cartoon logic - for most male cartoon animals, their fur IS their clothes. Just look at Tom, Sylvester or Foghorn Leghorn.

Here's a cool behind-the-scenes video that includes interviews with Bob Rafei, Takashi Iizuka, and Evan Baily, among others. There's also footage of the voice cast recording together, and if you look really closely, there's a couple of extremely brief glimpses of new gameplay footage.
Also, here's the official cast list:
• Sonic - Roger Craig Smith • Dr Eggman - Mike Pollock • Tails - Colleen Villard • Knuckles - Travis Willingham • Amy - Cindy Robinson • Orbot - Kirk Thornton • Cubot - Wally Wingert • Voice Director - Jack Fletcher
I'm a little surprised at the lack of Kate Higgins. Also, Cubot and Orbot confirmed.
