I think the term being thrown around for this is "re-imagining" of Star Fox 64 with little bits of SNES Starfox thrown in as well. It's sort like how Goldeneye (Wii) took the basic story/gameplay of Goldeneye (N64) and then updated it with current day actors/setting/technology.
GameXplain did a nice long video analysis of what they saw at E3. I like the possible idea that the Gyrowing/Zerowing/Heli-Arwing-Copter-thing-a-ma-jig might also be able to transform into the Blue Marine.

Does anybody actually want the Blue Marine to return? It was a great part of Steel Diver, but it was by far the worst vehicle in SF64.

I'd like to weigh in on the Krystal debate here, despite the fact that I really don't give two shits about Star Fox as a franchise, because we're talking about what seems to be a remake of Star Fox 64. If Nintendo made a remake of Super Mario World without Rosalina, what would our reaction be? How about Ocarina of Time without Groose? Krystal wasn't in Star Fox 64. Unless Nintendo's rebooting the franchise and intends to remove her from this point on, there should be no cause for alarm: It wasn't her game in the first place. You can't use Mario as an example because it has no timeline, no saga. Star Fox is a saga, and they're starting it on chapter 1... again. We don't know if that means the rest of the chapters (Star Fox Adventures) will be undone if they continue to make games from this point. Afteral, the characters like Fay from Star Fox 2 got undone when they rebooted it the first time. However, that game was never released so I don't know. But it does seem like (at least with Star Fox) they like starting over a lot.

I think it's likely the next game will be a sequel to this one, not Command. Most of Command's endings were pretty conclusive finales for that particular saga, so starting over from the beginning is probably the best way to go. Then we can just make up our own minds about which of Command's endings we think is the true one.

This is Nintendo we're talking about here. They were never big on stories in their games. Whenever anyone like Miyamoto is around, there's sure to be as less story as possible. Keep in mind that Platinum are not the ones "creating" this game. (Level design and bosses are on them, but that's it)
This game is like DKCR all over again, having brought back the bare minimum of what we're to expect from this franchise.

We have an official timeline for the Zelda franchise, yet no one complains that Groose didn't appear in Ocarina of Time 3DS, as I have already said. If this is a reboot of the franchise, then Krystal's absence in this game means absolutely nothing for the reason I just explained: If this is chapter 1 of a new Star Fox continuity with the basic plot structure of Star Fox 64 or Star Fox SNES, or if this is a flat-out remake of a game prior to Krystal's creation, she was not a character at the time. Her absence should be expected in this game. Her presence should be expected in later games. Star Fox 2 was never released. Fay didn't get undone or retconned out of existence, she never existed in the first place. If Krystal is retired in the next game in the Zero continuity, then we can say she's been retconned out, hence "Her presence should be expected in later games."

Star Fox 64 was a reboot, and it introduced Star Wolf who weren't supposed to appear until the second Venom war. Being a reboot, Nintendo can do anything they please with the story and characters. Instead of being dead, James McCloud could just be commanding the team from the Great Fox after being wounded in battle. Instead of meeting Fox after the war, Krystal could have been rescued as a child by James and Peppy. Instead of being useless, Bill could accomplish something.
Remember that SF0 is to SF64 as JJ Abrams Star Trek is to the 60's TV show.

I just view this as yet another alternate universe thing. If Krystal doesn't appear in future games I'll be sad, but hey, I can always go back and play Assault and Command again.

Here's some official character artwork. I'm still not a fan of Fox's bell-shaped head that they've been using since Command, but otherwise, I think they're lookin' pretty cool. I like how they've updated the uniforms. Way better than the weird outfits they had in Assault, IMHO.

It seems like the bell head shape has been toned down a bit from the E3 render.

A little late, but it's been delayed. …And with that, the rest of this year for the Wii U just went from good to worse.

Xenoblade is still coming, and that game is better than anything that SF0 could be.

I'm going to assume that I'm the only person that thought Nintendo's holiday was too crowded. Super Mario Maker just came out. October is bringing Yoshi's Woolly World and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. November is giving us Rodea: The Sky Soldier (the only major third-party exclusive I'm aware of). December will have Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and Devil's Third. And somewhere in there will be that Animal Crossing amiibo thing. (This is all for North America, of course.) I was interested in all of those except for Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing (altho I'm still a little on the fence with Devil's Third), plus there are some major indie games coming out that I was looking forward to (ie. Oddworld: New & Tasty). So more than likely, I was going to have to put off buying some of them until next year anyway. But hey, if you really want Star Fox on Wii U, you can always play the one that came out last year.

What's wrong, Manspeed? It was just his opinion, and it wasn't at anyone's expense. No need to take a dig at him for it.
