The way Smash (and all online fighting games with DLC) work is that the new data come with regular updates and the DLC are just unlock keys, so that those with DLC and those without can play together online. This is what I was referring to. I suppose my follow up question (which you may not know the answer to) would be, would more recent physical prints include some of the update data directly on the game card? Like the whole first expansion pass?

Fighter choice:I'm not sure if standalone, Blade-less Rex will be interesting. I don't play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (or any other entry), so I have no idea. Assuming the tag team idea many fans have wouldn't work, I guess Pyra makes more sense in terms of being an interesting fighter. I suppose one way Rex would have been theorized to work is that he would be on the plane of battle while Pyra/Mythra would be in the background (a la Pokémon Trainer), and he could switch between them, which would change his set of special moves (making him a de facto two-in-one character). To me, that would be the most obvious adaptation of how it works in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Is Smash Ultimate worth getting? In terms of contents, we already know what Smash Ultimate has. Gameplay-wise, I'd say as a casual player that while it feels different from Smash Wii U, it's not the same as the kind of change felt between Melee and Brawl or between Brawl and 3DS/Wii U. I genuinely like Smash Wii U better, but maybe that's more of because I don't like the current direction of Smash. I do have a few questions about Smash Ultimate: 1) Will playing it make my joy-cons wear out faster? 2) Is everything unlocked from the start, or do I have to fulfill requirements to unlock characters/stages like in older Smash games? 3) I assume I would need to download all DLC whether I purchase it or not so that it's available when playing online. Does it take up a lot of room on the Switch's memory? Also, there's something I didn't talk about in my initial post: the stage. Although, I don't actually have a lot to say about it. It looks rather small. But I like the changing day/night cycle, and that you can see the World Tree and the other titans in the background. Also, there's the obligatory appearances by other XC2 characters. I do wonder if Gramps/Azurda will speak and make comments during the battle. I don't have any comments on musical selection since we don't know it yet, but I would like to have selections from both the base game and Torna. XCX would be a nice bonus. I vastly prefer remixes to straight rips, but I imagine we'll only get one of those.

Being a big fan of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and hoping that a character from it would eventually get representation in Smash, I'm pretty excited about Pyra & Mythra, so I'm starting a thread to discuss it and archive some things. First, the reveal trailer: I got a kick out of this trailer. It was pretty easy to figure out it was a character reveal for Smash, but it was fun that they made it seem all dramatic, as if they were teasing a new Xenoblade. We got to see Rex and the other characters again, and I also liked hearing new voicework from Al Weaver and Skye Bennett. (Although, I'm not convinced that was Adam Howden at the end. He sounds a little off.) Here's the official renders: Official artwork from Masatsugu Saito: And fan art from Soraya Saga: Personal thoughts:The thing is, I'm not a huge fan of two-in-one transformation characters. Back when Zelda and Sheik were the same character, I almost never transformed into Sheik, and pretty much just used Zelda exclusively. (Ironically, I started using Sheik a lot more when they made her a separate character.) I guess I just like to focus on one character's move set rather than think about whether I should be using one or the other. That being said, it looks like it's an instantaneous transformation, and does not require cooldown after using (just like in Xenoblade Chronicles 2). It seems it can also act as a dodge (at 3:18 in the trailer, Link's sword whiffs when he tries to attack her while she transforms), so it does provide some incentive to use it. Aside from that, they do look fun to use. I look forward to Sakurai's usual in-depth presentation sometime in the next few weeks. With regards to Rex, I did favor him to be the XC2 rep, not just because he is the main player character, but because I feel he's unfairly disliked by a lot of people. I genuinely like Rex, and I wanted to see him get another chance to shine in the spotlight. But that's not to say I'm disappointed with Pyra & Mythra being chosen instead. For one thing, it's two characters in one. Mythra appears in both the base game and Torna ~ The Golden Country, so she can represent both games. And of course, there's also the extra female representation. Not to mention, I love both of their characters. Plus, Rex still appears in their final smashes and taunts, so he still gets to be there. So... does this mean I'm going to actually buy the game now? Not sure, but I always thought to myself that I would strongly consider getting Smash Ultimate if they did add a Xenoblade 2 character, and, well, here we are. So, uh... did you guys have any thoughts?

February 21 is officially the 35th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series.
Obviously a series that I'm quite fond of.

Yeah, I saw that. The creator is known for making Xenoblade analysis videos. I was thinking of maybe starting a thread for Pyra & Mythra in Smash, but I was worried it might come off as too self-indulgent. Then again, that's pretty much what this forum is for anyway, right?

SNK vs. Capcom is out now. However, according to Nintendo Life, SNK has announced a compilation of Neo Geo Pocket Color games for the Switch (including SvC). The price and what games are included have not been revealed yet. In other news, according to Gamasutra, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is buying up shares of Activision Blizzard, EA, and Take-Two, so SNK isn't the only company being gobbled up.

Overall, I thought it was a really good presentation. It was refreshing to have a full-fledged Nintendo Direct for a change.
Detailed thoughts:
- Pyra/Mythra in Smash
Finally, a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep! Been hoping for this for a long time. Although, you probably know I was pulling for Rex, but I always understood that Pyra & Mythra were a real possibility. Either way, no complaints from me.
Now I just need to consider whether I want to pay full price for a game I feel lukewarm about just because I'm excited about some paid DLC.
- Famicom Detective Club
It's really cool that these are getting an official English release. It's not really my style of game, though.
- Legend of Mana, SaGa Frontier Remastered
Even though I'm not a big Mana fan, Legend of Mana is one I've always wanted to try. Aside from looking and sounding gorgeous, it's also one of those weird, eccentric Akitoshi Kawazu games.
As for SaGa, I have yet to actually try any of the other SaGa games that are now available on the Switch (except for Final Fantasy Legend II, which I own the original Game Boy cartridge of), but SaGa Frontier is the one I would be most interested in. Especially since it includes the eighth scenario that was cut from the original version.
- Mario Golf: Super Rush
I've been hoping for a while that there would be a Mario Golf game on the Switch. Not because I'm a big fan of previous Mario Golf games (in fact, I've only played NES Open), but because I just kinda felt like playing a video golf game. But as Fry mentioned on Twitter, the environments seem a little bland. But the Speed Golf mode looks funny, and something about seeing Bowser dressed in casual golf clothes makes me laugh.
I do hope there's a demo, though. This might be one of those "try before I buy" situations. I tried both demos of Mario Tennis Aces, and didn't care for it at all. They just made it way too complex for a tennis game. I hope they don't do the same for this one.
- Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection
I've played Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge on Wii U. It's... OK. I still played it a good bit, though. I am interested in trying the first two, which are considered much better, but they're the Sigma versions, which fans consider inferior to Tomonobu Itagaki's original versions. That might not matter to me, though, so I'll keep an eye on this.
- Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass
Of course I'm getting this.
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
Really happy to see this. I, personally, liked the motion controls, but I hope the addition of non-motion controls helps more people to see what a great Zelda game this is. I'd like to know if there are any other changes, enhancements or QoL features. It seems like there should be more to it. I don't think this will be a day-one purchase for me.
(Also, having Eiji Aonuma appear and then say he had nothing to share about Breath of the Wild 2 was the biggest troll.)
- Splatoon 3
...OK. I still haven't played Splatoon 2 outside of the free demo last year. And I know that game came out in 2017, but for some reason, it still feels a little soon for a sequel.
The addition of bow weapons is pretty cool, though.

I think Byleth is a little like Link in Breath of the Wild because they're canonically stoic. Other characters make note that Byleth doesn't show a lot of emotion, and didn't even cry when they were born.
But it does make the marriage proposal at the end of the game seem a little funny.
Contrasting Three Houses with The Blazing Blade, though, I think playing as the silent "strategist" was more immersive for me. I think it's because I'm not being represented on screen by a character (except for the icon on the map) who has to impact the narrative. I'm just me, and I'm mostly just an observer whom the characters occasionally speak to or refer to. But it was done in a way that made me feel like I was part of the team.
I don't think that really counts as a silent protagonist, though. I just like the way it was handled.

I wanted to share this cool video I came across. It shows all of the Ys games in the order of the official timeline (except for showing Origin after Ys I & II). It also shows some of the different versions of each game, along with clips from cutscenes and official artwork, all set to various music selections. It's very well done. It's almost like watching an official promo video for the Ys series.

So, it's been forever since I updated here.
Been playing Ys Origin. Finished all three character routes and unlocked the Arena Mode, where I've also unlocked the Felghana version of Adol. Now working on unlocking the alternate versions of the main characters.
Been working slowly through Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. Having already played the DS remake, this isn't really anything new for me, but there's something special about being able to play the original Fire Emblem. Sure, it's rough and primitive, and lacks a lot of quality of life improvements (thank goodness you can rewind to previous turns in this version), but I still appreciate it. The game might have been a bit overwhelming for me if I had actually played it on my NES as a kid, but as an adult, I can still take myself back to the frame of mind I had then and enjoy it for what it is.
Also, the 8-bit character animations are cute.
I also finally bought Panzer Dragoon: Remake, because it was on sale for 75% off. I've already beaten it on all three difficulty settings, but it's a fun playthrough, and I expect I'll still replay it. As far as rail shooters go, it won't be replacing Sin & Punishment 2 or Star Fox Zero as my all-time favorites, but I'm glad to have finally tried a game in such a classic series. I look forward to the Panzer Dragoon II Zwei remake.

Here's the interviews:
This isn't what I expected. I thought it might just be a quick 10-20 minute Nintendo Minute video, but this is much bigger than that. I also wasn't expecting a Fire Emblem Heroes character to be conducting the interviews. Well worth watching, though!
Christian La Monte tells the best story about voicing Ignatz's S-support conversation. (EDIT: I keep writing "S-rank" when I mean S-support.)
