So you're implying that... if you could play a translated MOTHER 3, then throwing Lucas in Brawl would be justified? So if everyone in Europe played every US game through emulation, then the games would be considered worldwide?
The game doesn't have an official release in Europe, so, for Nintendo of Europe, the game never existed. People with +100 original PAL games couldn't play it. It could be frustrating for some people you know.
See, this issue is ambiguous. The whole Japanese only characters is totally ambiguous. Tomorrow they could release MOTHER 3 in Europe and be grieving over Lucas the next 5 years, "Why Sakurai, why! Lucas was great, better than Ness, now I have to wait 5 years to play with him in the next Smash Bros." I think that's what will happen.

If the entire Mother series was Japan-only, I'd be fine with Lucas replacing Ness. But why punish Western EarthBound fans for not living in Japan, or being able to read Japanese? They should have the entire world fanbase in mind, not just Japan.

Punish? Ness won't disappear from the game. There will be MOTHER 2 content, like music and stages, even assist trophies. But it's time for MOTHER 3 to take over the stagnant MOTHER 2 (Smash-wise). Not just Onett / aliens / sound stones / Fourside again and again.
The same could be said about Japanese FE players, why they have to be punished for living in Japan and not having characters from early titles? They'll still have trophies and music, but now give some room to the new generations to shine, don't you think?

...Path of Radiance was released in Japan too, you know. Unlike Mother 3. Japanese fans won't be missing anything.
Well, if Lucas is in, I hope to god that he's not in the story. I don't want to sit through movies I have no hope of ever understanding because they're dealing with the story of a game we'll never get. That would just frustrate me, personally.

Is THAT what this whole argument is about? It's not about how many obscure/Japan-only characters are in at all, but about whether Lucas will replace Ness? I will be brutally honest... I would be very surprised if Lucas replaced Ness. Reading through some of the posts on Japanese messageboards and the like, you see a lot more Ness fans as well. And they also seem very sensitive to "overseas" requirements. They know Mother and Mother 3 never came out here, and for those who are big Ness fans, that's a good reason to keep Ness in the game. But I have a new idea. Screw it. I'll start a new thread. No, argument started as Japan/obscured characters, but when you talk about that the Lucas/Ness thing pops up. Thinking on it. Kirbychu has a good point. For the same reason they added Ike, they may keep Ness. So far, Sakurai has only said Mother 3 music will be in Brawl.

STOP ARGUING ABOUT HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS!!! What makes you think the Subspace Emissary storyline will have anything to do with the storyline of Mother 3?! Why would including Japan-only characters be a punishment to anyone? Anyone who knows will appreciate it. Anyone who doesn't know will either be curious (enter NinDB) or simply not care! Do you really think Marth's appearance in SSBM confused and infuriated a majority of its players? No reason why not - at the time only a select few Westerners had heard of Marth, let alone Roy! Please, everyone - you're all talking a load of shit. Please stop before I go mad!

I'll have you know Marth's inclusion ruined any prospects I ever had at a happy, meaningful life.

I seriously doubt Marth had anything to do with that. You were already on a downward spiral... all those years ago...

I'll have you know Marth's inclusion ruined any prospects I ever had at a happy, meaningful life. Marth did upset me a little too... I was disapointed I never heard of him. But I swore... that would NOT happen again! And so I found this site. Speaking of which... remember when you used to have the series list... and you made up icons for every series like in Smash Brothers... but even for series that never had icons like Punch out and urban champion? Those were totally awesome... you should bring em back!

No, of course nobody was frustrated by Marth. But that's because he didn't replace an all-regions version of himself. Everybody seems to be missing the part where I said I want Japan-only characters. I just don't want said Japan-only characters to replace characters who're near identical anyway, but are actually accessible to people outside Japan.

No, of course nobody was frustrated by Marth. But that's because he didn't replace an all-regions version of himself. Lucas will never replace an all-regions version of himself as there has been no all-regions Earthbound character. A US / Japanese one, yes, but thats not all regions. To hell with Ness and smelly US fanboys. Bring on Lucas.

Oh come on, you know what I meant. Replace "all-regions" with "multi-region", then.

Yeah but what I'm getting at is, in general terms based on where they were released, its really only the US that would be supporting Ness, as Japan have all 3 characters to choose from, and Europe would have no preference.
And nobody cares about the US.
EDIT: My post makes very little sense. Basically what I'm trying to say is that, in a general sense, of the 3 main regions, only 1 (US) would have a bias for Ness over Lucas, assuming that newer characters take preference over older ones.

I got what you said DiU
Man. What a heated debate. Sadly it can go either way. I understand what DiU is getting at, but Japan has Ness while we don't have Lucas, so it's a bit unfair to us. This can go on forever until Sakurai announces either one.
