Yes, but it's not a Nintendo game. Therein lies the problem. And Little Mac wasn't from a side-view fighting game. It was rear-view if anything.
Still, he'd be a wiser choice for a fighting character than, say, Dr. Mario.

I think Dr. Mario would be a great fighting player

What do you mean 'would be'... he's in SSBM! And he's basically Mario with different sound effects. YAWN!

My turn... ;D
Need more characters, that's for sure, but not too may I've never heard of... I mean, I'm a Nintendo fan, but I only know what's in the West (like most Nitnendo gamers in the West), so I had no idea who or what Roy and Marth were until SSBM (and I don't like them that much anyway... are they guys or girls, cos they look like girls... I'm guessing one's a guy and the other a girl, right?).
Dr Mario was pointless, and should be replaced with Wario (he'd have some wicked moves), but Luigi HAS to stay - I'm a Luigi fan, as you may have guessed.
Some cool things like Paper Mario would be cool, but then I'd like to see a cel-shaded Link alongside the realistic one... it would be kinda fun...
Other to add: Olimar, the Balloon Fight guy (we had the Ice Climber people - balloons can be fun... maybe not...), Starfy, and THE HAND (I think it should be the ultimate unlockable character - carnage would ensue).
I'd also like to see more sprawling arenas, like the Hyrule Castle level - 80% of my battles take place their, due to the size of the level - we need an entire strtch of land out of a Super Mario game, or a whole block from Onett, or something...
And... better single-player yet again.
That's it from me. Whatever...

I think that there should be some "who the hell is that?" type characters in the game, ones that are either from really old games or from Japan only games, as I think this adds to the coolness of the game. I have no problem having characters that I have no idea who they are, as long as the game is not overrun by them. Just a few would be good.
Characters like Andronicus just mentioned are all good - I also really want a Cel-Shaded Link, with items from Wind Waker, 4 Swords and Minish Cap, and Paper Mario would be quite cool (could be the lightest character by far in the game, which would mean he gets knocked away really easily but would have plenty of time to recover as he would fall like... well, paper). Also chuck in a classic DK in old-school style, like G&W in SSBM. Would be a good final unlockalbe character in the new SSB.
Also would like to see more evil characters - some Metroid enemies (I'm not necessarily saying the Metroids - though they could be good - just enemies from the series of games called Metroid), as well as Kirby, Star Fox and whatever.
Also, regarding clones, change some entirely - specifically, Ganondorf, Young Link (would become the Cel Link I mentioned above) and maybe Falco, and remove Dr. Mario, Pichu and Roy (or better yet, have alternate costumes for characters).
Also have some more arenas, like Andronicus said have some more big ones and stuff, but also take some from Nintendo games that don't have a fighter "representing" them. 1080 snowboarding fighter = ugh, 1080 snowboarding based level = cool (damn, I must have used that word about 8 times in this post).
..and some other stuff. etc. etc.
Oh, and Marth and Roy are both male - afterall, according to the crowd, "Roy's our boy!"

ALL the clones should be removed, if not modified entirely! Leave spaces for other new characters~ And yeah, Ice Climbers could have be one of the "I have no idea who they are" characters. Afterall, they've been hiding for YEARS!

Most people hadn't heard of the Ice Climbers when SSBM's characters were first announced. Nowadays though they appear everywhere, as if they were Mario or Link!
It's only a matter of time before they appear in a new game of their own, I'm sure.

Yeah, SSB:M has been a re-starting point for a couple of characters in that respect. ...umm...curses! I should start thinking before I open my keyboard! ...ah! Fire Emblem is an example! *satified smirk* smooth moves

No you're quite right. Think about it... since SSBM:
1. Metroid has more than doubled the number of games in its series (the last one was Super Metroid). 2. A compilation of Mother games was released for GBA. 3. Fire Emblem has resurfaced and been shipped around the world. 4. Ice Climber has been rereleased in the first wave of NES Classics, and is the only one of the "early" NES games to get a US release (no Clu Clu Land, Balloon Fight, etc... even though these were released in Japan).
And that's just the main characters... the trophies have done nearly as much!

I wonder why they didn't make Metroid for the Game Boy Colour or Nintendo 64

The GBC they could have, but lets's face it - the GB version had its limitations - Samus was about 1/4 of the screen size - the wait for GBA was well worth it. As for N64 - it might have looked crappy... I mean, the N64 didn't have the greatest lighting capabilities, and Metroid Prime is all about the atmosphere... As for Super Smash Bros., I agree with Andronicus as well ( )...

Because I think the main reason for the Metroid resurge is Prime, as that game introduced Metroid to a new audience just as much, if not more, than SSBM, IMO. The Ice Climbers are definately the best example, though. They didn't stand out compared to any of the other NES games, but now I'll eat my hat if we don't see Ice Climbers DS soon.

Yeah, one of the Samus trophies in SSBM did mention something about Metroid Prime coming soon, I think...
Ice Climbers DS? That would work with that Mario vs. DK DS idea I've mentioned around here before - you work your way constantly upwards from the bottom screen, seeing the actions in the top one - think Yoshi Touch & Go, but backwards!

Don't forget, Samus was also in SSB. That probably fueled the fire for a new Metroid, which led to the development of Prime. Though I expect Prime and SSBM were in development at roughly the same time (both Retro and HAL would have been amongst the first to get their hands on GC devkits).
I said I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Ice Climber game some time soon... doesn't necessarily mean I WANT to see a new Ice Climber game. Let it be and give us more Balloon Fight/Kid, is what I say.
I'd say Clu Clu Land, but DK: King of Swing is the spiritual successor to that anyway.
