I've said this somewhere already, but after the ResiEvil4s and the new LoZ's of this world, take a good look (and listen) to SSBM. It's partially recorded music, quite a few of the trophies are blocky, while even more have that shiny plastic texture Nintendo seems fond of in the Mario Party games.
I can see ways in which SSBM itself could be improved. Imagine if there were less trophies, but they were animated (like the character profiles in SSB) and gorgeously textured. Imagine if all of the music was composed by an orchestra. Imagine...

I say implement BOTH features!
TO be honest, I was thinking about playable versions of the first game to star each fighting character in the next SSB, but that's unrealistic - DIU's idea would be AWESOME!
Box art, character info, images, maybe instruction booklet, maybe game enemies, maybe a short video, etc. It would make it great as a Nintendo fan's collector piece!
But then, why not ALSO include animated trophies simply for the main fighters or something big like that?
And, an unlockable comprehensive history of Nintendo!
OK - that's a lot, and most of it won't happen... but, now that I think about it, DIU's idea would rock! I'd buy the game simply for that feature, even if there was no fighting invloved!
Nintendo and HAL have potential to do great things with the next SSB... ;D

Well, the space between SSBM and the present is actually longer than the space between SSB and SSBM... and you see what a big leap was made between those two.
I do like the game box idea though... but with the whole hog as listed above I think we'd be looking at a collectable portion of the game more substantial in game size than the actual fighting.

SSB wasn't a 64 launch title. SSB:M was just a few weeks shy of being one, so the bigger gap can be forgiven. Maybe we'll get to see some SSB footage for the Revolution, yes?

Can you even be sure there is going to be a new smash brothers? I mean, financially it's a wise idea but is there really that much room for improvement? Could a new Smash brothers have the same effect the original or melee had? I don't think so because by now we're used to the idea of smash brothers. Naturally, round three won't be as impressive or as anticipated as the previous two.
The original, while low budget, slow, and ugly... was perfect. The character selection was PERFECT (the only argument there is Jigglypuff). There was a representitive of all Nintendo's popular franchises. If you're going to put only the main character against each other... what was missing? Luigi was great as a hidden character, and the only other thing I could say about it was Jigglypuff could have been replaced by... Marth maybe since Pikachu was already representing Pokemon and Fire Emblem was not there. Not to mention the music and victory tunes were awesome. This game brought tears to my eyes when I first played it.
The sequel for Gamecube was also another ground breaking game for me... but because they got rid of the ugly, slowness, and just added so much new stuff. (Just look at what the added... the list is huge). The roster this time around however opened the door for supporting characters and villains, which means now it's more complicated as to who they should've added, who they shouldn't have.
My point is.... how can they top Melee? I don't see how. Hearing the same Zelda theme remixed AGAIN isn't Nostolgic at all, it's repetitive. And they can't NOT put it in because it's the theme song. Same with most of the songs used.... nostalgia is DEAD.
The gameplay is almost perfect as well.... if they do anything to the gameplay it'll upset people, but if they don't they'll upset people. And I don't know how many new/old characters they can add without really digging into some old and untouched games. Ice Climbers represent the NES era, so that's sort of their series... the and people weren't sure they even belonged in the game (I still know a few who think they dont' belong). The only characters they can add are supporting characters, villains, ect.
I don't know... I HOPE they outdo themselves with an incredible, awesome game with so much new and original stuff it'll blow us all away. But there hasn't been any mention, rumor, hint of a new Smash Brothers and there might not ever be one.... that's all I'm saying. In this age of nothing but remakes, and sequels things never come to an end. Maybe Smash Brothers quit while it's ahead? I'm not saying that's what I want, I'm just saying it's a possibility.

Maybe they will... but I can see how they could improve it in small ways already.
For a start, the graphics and sound are very much first-generation. They have lasted the test of time very well, but instead of having some MIDI and some orchestral music, instead made it all played by orchestra or bands. That would be excellent. Graphics-wise, beef up the texture mapping. SSBM is still way ahead of a lot of games in this department, but I can see room for improvement this late into the console's life.
Expand on the Adventure Mode idea. It promised so much with the Mario and Zelda levels... but after that the only things that really stood out were the Metroid and F-Zero levels. One for each series? It's possible... unlock more levels when you unlock more characters? Why not! Maybe REALLY push the links to the games. It's an idea that was borne of genius, but never fully explored.
Trophies? Why trophies? Maybe animated heroes, game information, all sorts of extra possibilities. The idea of collecting Nintendo games has grown on me a bit... and collecting game boxes with some game data could even be transferred to a less capable machine, such as the DS.
What else? Well, character rosters could be greatly expanded. Sure, some people don't think characters they don't recognise should be there... I call these people "morons". Most people don't recognise Ness or Captain Falcon either... doesn't mean they shouldn't be included.
There've been loads of great ideas so far in this thread for changes and improvements. The only way to really change a winning formula is to balance it with new characters. This is what Pokemon has done for three generations... kill the Psychics, improve the underused Poison and Fighting types... you know the stuff.

Sort of off topic, but I think they should take Pichu, Young Link, Falco, and Dr. Mario out, and replace them with Wario, Takamaru, Pit, Marina (if she is a Nintendo character), Mike Jones, Ray Mk II, Meta Knight, Diddy Kong, and Little Mac. I think it'd be very cool if for each game series, there was a boss fight. Instead of there only being Master Hand, Crazy Hand, Wire frames, and Giga Bowser, they should include King K Rool, Ganon (not Ganondorf), Andross, Deathborn (F-zero GX), Ridley, Starman (Earthbound), Mewtwo (?), Nightmare (Kirby Adventure), and whichever other ULTIMATE villain that may be a challenge to fight. The theme of the next smash bros. can be Good Guys V.S. Bad Guys. You guys definitely had this conversation before. But what do you think?

I dont think characters shouldn't be taken out. There in keep them there. Also I HATE the Good vs. Bad thing. It makes it more strutred and SSB isn't. Its just fun. Ridley and King K. Rool should be a character. I dont think characters like Ray MK 2 should be in. But your list is still good. Also who is Takamaru.

The Good vs. Evil thing would simply be an excuse for a varied character roster, or even structured Adventure Mode battles (if I slog my way through a Zelda Adventure Mode stage, I want to fight Ganon at the end, not Zelda ) But I'd still prefer to see some jettisoned. In the event of unlimited space, sure, keep 'em all... why not... but I'd rather see some lame ducks kicked out than have some cool characters missed out due to lack of space on the disk.
