Here's a video of Akitoshi Kawazu and Toshiyuki Itahana reflecting on the development of the original FFCC. (Turn on closed captions for English subtitles.)

Square Enix has released a rather lengthy and detailed interview with some of the original members of the FFCC development staff, including Akitoshi Kawazu (producer), Kazuhiku Aoki (director), and Toshiyuki Itahana (character designer). It's a really good read. EDIT: Also, here's a collection of concept art with commentary by Itahana.

Maybe there's more of these kinds of references than I realize. When I see stuff like this in a Nintendo game, I tend to think that it's unusual and un-Nintendo like. (Although, NoA has gained a little bit of a negative reputation in the past several years for occasionally putting memes into their localizations. I do not count those as pop culture references, by the way.) Also, nice to see you around again, Spud!

It's not too unusual for Nintendo games and series to reference each other (we have this entire section of the forum dedicated to that), but it's a lot less common for Nintendo games to make overt pop culture references. However, I was able to think of four examples, and I was wondering if you guys might know of any more. And just to make a distinction, I'm talking about specific references, and not simply things being influenced by what's popular at the time (like, for example, the similarities of the Metroid series to the Alien movies, the Katina level in Star Fox 64 resembling the climax of the movie Independence Day, or Link in Ocarina of Time supposedly being based on Leonardo DiCaprio). Here are the examples I came up with: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE - The character Barry Goodman is an otaku who was previously a guitarist in an American heavy metal band called Gigadeth. This is a very loose reference to Marty Friedman, former guitarist of the band Megadeth, who has been living in Japan since 2003. Xenoblade Chronicles - I've mentioned this on Twitter, but there's an achievement in the game called "Truly Outrageous," which you earn for equipping gems in all eight possible slots on a single character. This seems to be a really random reference to the '80s cartoon series Jem and its theme song " Truly Outrageous." I'm curious to know if this is the same in the Japanese version, but I feel like it might've been something Nintendo of Europe added on their own. (Was Jem popular in the UK?) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - There's a bartender and member of The Resistance in Hyrule Castle Town named Telma, and she has a cat named Louise. Telma and Louise seem to be a reference to the title characters in the 1991 film Thelma & Louise. Kid Icarus - There's a type of enemy named Phil that circles around another enemy named Collin. It seems to be a reference to singer/songwriter Phil Collins. Fry actually made a thread that pointed this out back in 2011. Can you guys think of any more?

One week to release. Also, it looks like there will be paid DLC, including eight skins of characters from other games in the series. ( Source) They'll be available separately, as well as in a bundle. *sigh* I'm sure I'll sucker into getting it. Eventually. I do have to commend Square Enix for never forgetting about Crystal Chronicles, even if it's more niche and less successful than other Final Fantasy games. They've included several characters from it in the Dissidia mobile game, Sherlotta is in World of Final Fantasy Maxima, and music from it was included in the Theatrythm music game. Also, seeing the skins for Yuri, Chelinka, and Sherlotta makes me want remakes/remasters of the DS games Ring of Fates and Echoes of Time with the graphical style of the original Crystal Chronicles.

Here it is: Not too much to say... A Short Hike seemed fun and relaxing. I'll look into that one.
Torchlight III is coming to Switch. I've played the original Torchlight on PC, but I never finished it because it got repetitive.
That's about it, really.

Not a full update, but here's some footage of the ship customization, as well as literally less than five seconds of gameplay.

Ah, yeah. I forgot about that. I did all the side quests anyway, but that did strike me as a little odd.
Maybe it's because he wasn't the "main" antagonist? (Although, he was the more interesting one.) Kind of like how the "ending" (sort of) of Tyrea's story plays out in a side quest in the main game.

Today, August 8, is the 17th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube.
Getting into this series was a bit of a slow burn for me. I actually rented the original right after it had first released. I thought it was OK, but it was just after I had rented the GameCube remake of Resident Evil, which was my first time playing a game in that series, and it left an impression on me. So, every time I started up Crystal Chronicles, I wished I was still playing Resident Evil.
Then, I went through my phase where I felt like I was over RPGs. It wasn't until I decided to try My Life as a King on WiiWare in 2008 that I thought I should give the series another shot. I absolutely loved My Life as King, and so I bought a used copy of the original game. It was then that it finally clicked with me, and I've been a fan since.
I've only ever played the original in single player, so I'm looking forward to trying the multiplayer mode in the remastered edition. (Hope the online doesn't suck.)

So, SNK news summary: The Neo Geo Pocket Color games Samurai Shodown 2! and The King of Fighters R-2 should be available on the eShop today. The Neo Geo Samurai Shodown Collection was also released last week. A third season of DLC was announced for SamSho 2019, but no characters have been revealed yet. There was also a free DLC character released: Gongsun Li, a crossover character from the mobile game Honor of Kings. On a somewhat related note, Famitsu has been publishing some article on Samurai Shodown recently... in English. Since when did Famitsu start publishing some articles in English? (And why are they all about SamSho?) I admit I've fallen off the bus when it comes to supporting SNK on Switch, but I'm limited in what I can spend these days. Plus, I've been leaning more into JRPGs.

In what way? I honestly hadn't put much thought into it.

Apparently, according to Nintendo's financial earnings report, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition sold 1.32 million units, making it Monolithsoft's fastest selling game. I'm glad to hear this, as I thought the game dropped out of the North American eShop's top 30 disappointingly fast. It seems to have sold much better in Japan and Europe.
